The Oozlefinch

The story of the Oozlefinch began in 1905 at Fort Monroe, Virginia, when an artillery officer swore he saw a strange, featherless bird outside the officers' club

The Sighting: Captain Henry MacPherson Merriam claimed to see a large-eyed, featherless bird near the club bar, likely while under the influence of alcohol.

The Name: His fellow officers named the bizarre creature the "Oozlefinch".

Flying Backwards: The bird famously flew backwards not to look where it was going, but to see where it had been (or to keep dust out of its large, lidless eyes).

Military Mascot: It became the unofficial mascot of the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps, later passing down to the Air Defense Artillery.
